Whether you are looking for a bare-bones base trim or a top-of-the-line version with all of the bells and whistles, you can find it at Gengras Ford. Available in five unique trims, our experts have put together a detailed trim breakdown to help you make the best decision on which one to buy. Let’s get started with the entry model and work our way up from there.

Ford Explorer

Known simply as the Explorer, the entry-level trim for the new Ford Explorer isn’t as basic as the title may lead you to believe. Kickstarting the entire lineup is a turbocharged 2.3-liter Ecoboost 4-cylinder engine that delivers 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission and RWD (Intelligent 4WD is also available), this powertrain can tow up to 5,300 pounds without breaking a sweat. As for the fuel economy, you can expect to get around 24 MPG combined (21 MPG city/28 MPG highway).

This particular trim comes with functional exterior features such as a power lift gate to make it easier to load up the back. You don’t have to set your groceries on the ground. LED taillights and automatic high beams are also included for enhanced visibility.

On the interior, you will find a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a 35/30/35 split-folding second-row bench, and 50/50 split-folding third-row seats for optimized configurability. As for technology, you can create multiple temperature bubbles within the cabin by using the trim-zone climate control system. Meanwhile, the infotainment interface is displayed on an 8-inch touchscreen. Operating with advanced smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), you can access online features via the onboard Wi-Fi hotspot.

Before we move on to the next trim, you should also note that every new Ford Explorer comes with several high-tech safety features. First is a two-in-one deal. The BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) comes with Cross-Traffic Alert to help prevent accidents on the highway and in parking lots. You will be alerted if another vehicle drives up beside you or if it crosses behind you while you are in reverse.

Next is the Lane-Keeping System. This system monitors the lines on the road to ensure that you do not drift outside your designated lane. Then, we have the Automatic Emergency Braking. Using sensors, this element scans the road ahead and to detect oncoming obstacles and alert you to take evasive action. If you do nothing, it will trigger the braking system. Finally, the trailer sway control will help to minimize the movement of the trailer you are towing.

Ford Explorer XLT

The second trim level for the new 2021 Ford Explorer is known as the XLT. This model builds off of the base trim by adding convenient and functional features like roof rails. If you have extra luggage or oddly shaped items that simply won’t fit inside the cabin with all the seats in use, you can safely stash these items on top of the vehicle. Keyless entry/ignition and an exterior keypad have also been installed to make your mornings run a lot smoother.

Slipping behind the leather-wrapped steering wheel, you will notice the upgraded front seats now come with a heating element. You don’t have to hop inside a cold cabin in the winter anymore! Plus, the second-row seating has been upgraded to captain’s chairs for a more comfortable ride experience for back-seat passengers. Also, a couple of USB ports have been added to the second-row so that your kids can keep their mobile devices charged.

Ford Explorer Limited

Stepping up to the mid-level Limited model, you will find a lot of great upgrades on the inside. Starting with the subtle leather upholstery and the heated steering wheel, the interior is much more elegant than the lower trims. Ambient lighting helps to set a relaxing mood, and the front seats get ventilation for cooling during the summer. The second-row seats are heated with power-adjustability, and sunshades have been added to the rear to keep the cabin cool.

There are several tech upgrades as well. A voice-controlled navigation system has been installed to help you get to your desired destination quickly. A wireless charging pad is also included to help prevent clutter, and the stereo has been updated with a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen system.

Finally, the Limited trim also gets a few safety system enhancements. First is the Lane Centering feature that will make minor adjustments to keep you in the middle of your lane. Next, front parking sensors are included to help prevent fender benders while you are parallel parking. Then, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control enables you to maintain a set distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Even if that vehicle slows down, the system will match the pace of traffic, so you don’t have to stomp on the brakes. Finally, the surround-view camera system provides you with a 360-degree view of what’s around you. This is ideal for crowded parking lots.

Ford Explorer ST

If you are interested in a sportier trim, then you should consider the 2021 Ford Explorer ST. This one is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter Ecoboost V6 engine that pushes out 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. Equipped with Intelligent 4WD and a 10-speed automatic transmission, it has a maximum towing capacity of 5,600 pounds. You can also expect to get around 21 MPG combined (18 MPG city/26 MPG highway). Fitted with a sport-tuned suspension and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, this model gives off Olympian vibes.

Inside the cabin, you will find that the racetrack theme continues with the sport front seats and digital instrument panel. Memory functions have also been added to the front seats, and a few extra safety systems have been installed. The first is the Reverse Brake Assist that can detect objects and stop you before hitting them when backing up. The other is the Active Park Assist 2.0 that can steer the Explorer into a parallel or perpendicular spot with little to no input from you.

Ford Explorer Platinum

Lastly, the top-of-the-line trim is known as the Platinum. While it still comes with the upgraded V6 engine, it loses the athletic features of the ST for a more luxurious appeal. On the exterior, you will notice the Adaptive Headlamps with LED Signature Lighting that swivel as you turn the steering wheel. This is beneficial for illuminating curves at night. The Class 3 Trailer Tow package has also been added.

Stepping into the cabin, you will find the revised digital gauge cluster display. This is where you can read all of the vehicle’s vital data like speed, mileage, remaining fuel, and more. Also, premium leather upholstery covers the interior for a more sophisticated look.

Ford Explorer Add-Ons

Many of the following features can be added to most trim levels unless otherwise specified. A sunroof is a popular option for many families. The hands-free liftgate is another great feature to add since it allows you to load the cargo area without fumbling around for your key fob. Power-folding third-row seats can also be installed for easier cabin configuration, and you can also add a massage component to the front seats. This makes long trips much more enjoyable.

As for stand-alone tech upgrades, you can opt for a larger 10.1-inch touchscreen for the multimedia center. You can also get a premium Bang & Olufsen stereo with 14 speakers and a dual-screen entertainment system for the rear. Some of these features may come standard on the higher trims, but many can be added to lower trims so you can make the most out of your Explorer.
